The Burnet Youth Football League’s four teams took on the Liberty Hill Panthers with one Bulldogs team coming away with a win.

That was the fifth-graders, who earned a 20-6 victory Aug. 27 thanks to three rushing touchdowns by quarterback Ace Ingram and a stingy defense led by noseguard Brayden Chevez.

“Ace can throw the ball, too,” BYFL president Grant Murray said. “We’re polishing that. We have work to do in the passing game. He’s 110 pounds and has enough size and speed to play the position. Chevez caused one fumble and recovered one. He had six tackles in that game.”

The Burnet sixth-graders and the junior varsity (third- and fourth-graders) each lost 6-0 and the freshmen (first- and second-graders) also lost 34-13.

“I was real happy with the way we played,” Murray said. “Traditionally, Liberty Hill is winning by several touchdowns. I’m really pleased with our progress the last month or so.”

He noted as more families move into the area, they are enrolling their children in the league and are volunteering to help by coaching or other ways. That also has been a positive, he added.

“One of my coaches for the fifth-graders moved here after July 1,” he said. “He’s taken that team over.”

Overall, Murray felt good about the start to the season.

“We had a really good day,” he said. “We had penalties in the sixth grade we have to polish. The group as a whole is solid compared to where they were this time last year. In the fifth grade, only two kids played tackle football previous to this year. We probably could have won the JV game. We have to score more points. Liberty Hill is bigger and physical. We probably had too many three-and-outs. We had too many penalties. The freshman team is a product of new kids coming out.”

The Bulldogs return to play Saturday, Sept. 10. The freshmen, fifth-graders and sixth-graders all face Fredericksburg Red with the freshmen taking the field at 12:30 p.m., the fifth-graders at 2 p.m. and the sixth-graders at 3:30 p.m. all in Cedar Park. The Burnet junior varsity is traveling to play Smithson Valley White at 1:30 p.m. in Smithson Valley.
